  38. Okay folks, here we go again (probably).

  40. I'm on my way to becoming a ham again (old call-sign WB7RHQ) and started
  41. searching for my old rigs.
  42.  
  43. I was able to find my HW-8 transceiver, but no power supply and no 
  44. documentation. What are my chances of getting any information out of
  45. Heath/Zenith/(whoever owns them now). Also it seems to have run with a
  46. 13 volt supply and short of building one myself, there don't seem to
  47. be many ready-made, inexpensive 13V supplies around. Could I get by
  48. with a 12V supply?

  75. Is the Icom Newsletter any good?  Has the IC-3210A been covered in any
  76. back issues?  I talked to them on the phone (and I believe they even have
  77. an 800 number) and asked them about mods for the IC-3210A (was referred
  78. there Icom) and they said they had none.  I then asked about the IC-2GAT
  79. (which is one I knew then exists, because I had it) and they said that
  80. all they have are mods for IC-2AT and IC-02AT for out of band receive
  81. (in the latter) and more audio power.  It SEEMED they were really a way
  82. behind type of operation.

  84. Now my question, to someone who reads the Icom Newsletter, did they
  85. publish mods for the IC-3210A or the IC-2GAT?  It would seem odd that
  86. they would for the IC-2400A and not the others.  If so, I guess the
  87. person I talked to on the phone did not know anything, or really did
  88. not want to bother looking (they sure turned me off of ever subscribing).

  94. This is also in the Service Manual for the IC-2GAT.  Look at the specs
  95. and the diode matrix for the Italian version of the radio.  Find the
  96. diode that exists in the Italian version and NO OTHER.

  130. The Extra Ham Stack is now available for those who would like it.  This is
  131. a HyperCard stack, which runs only on MacIntosh computers, and is a help
  132. for taking the Amateur Extra written test.

  134. I also have the bug fixes for Novice, Technician, General and Advanced
  135. Ham Stacks typed into the computer, and can forward a copy to any current
  136. owners of these stacks (warning, bug fix for Novice v2.0 and Technician
  137. v2.0 only, if you have an earlier version, these won't help you).  I want
  138. to apologize for the large number of typographical errors in the Technician
  139. Ham Stack v2.0....I should have held onto it longer and audited it better....
  140. sigh....  For those who have access to ftp, the updated stacks will appear
  141. shortly on tank.uchicago.edu.

  161. Sounds like a lawyer was trying to get creative, and the judge bought it,
  162. even though he probably would have (and should have) ruled that way anyway.

  164. If I am in my bedroom, in a motel room, a room in a brothel, or wherever,
  165. then I should expect the right of privacy BECAUSE I did not intend for it
  166. to be for anyone other than myself and whoever I was with, and it is
  167. unreasonable to expect a secret camera taping it.

  169. On the other hand if I set up the camera and radiate the TV signal to my
  170. neighbor so he can see it, don't attempt to scramble it, then I cannot
  171. expect to prevent someone else from also being able to receive it and
  172. treat it either as public, or private to themselves.

  210. If all you are going to run is 50ft, and don't want to be burning up too
  211. many bucks, and 800 Mhz and up is not the majority of what you listen to,
  212. then the RG-8U would be a good deal as a fair compromise (4.5 db at 50ft).

  274. interference? Moved to a new qth and thought Id have trouble with
  275. stereos/tv's etc. but it seems I only have telephone interference.
  276. On my phone (GE) an in-line filter like the Z100A offered at 
  277. phone-center stores doesnt help. If I switch to an ATT phone no 
  278. problem. So I think something inside the GE phone is demodulating
  279. the RF and its not line induced. As a matter of fact, if I wind
  280. the coiled handset line around a split toroid it reduces the
  281. interference a lot but not completely, so I think this is
  282. one of the main points of entry.

  284.     One neighbor has the reverse problem...their Panasonic
  285. phone is OK but their ATT phone is horrendous....I gave them a
  286. Z100A filter and dont know the verdict yet but in meantime thought
  287. Id get advice from the net. The neighbor on the other side of me
  288. has an ATT 1600 whom I also will give a filter. But if its like
  289. my problem then its not line-induced and wont help. It seems to be
  290. telephone-specific, an rf suppression practice I have says to bypass
  291. all components that are likely rf demodulators but this is rather
  292. broad and vague.

  294.     Seeing as the coiled cord was a culprit in my case do they
  295. make shielded coiled cord?? The 40BA capacitor and 1542A inductor
  296. mentioned in the practice doesnt seem to be available and anyway,
  297. the practice says they're only good up to 10MHz. What about those
  298. RF modified phones and handsets mentioned but not available in
  299. the phone center stores?? Does anyone know of any particular
  300. key points in the phone that should be bypassed by a 0.1 or 0.01 uF
  301. cap?? Any help would be appreciated.

  303.     By the way all Im trying to run here is 100 watts. I
  304. have a good ground, lowpass filter and have the shell of the
  305. lpf well grounded. Ive run checks with my neighbors on all
  306. other electronic equipment and no other type of interference
  307. crops up. As a matter of fact, one neighbor doesnt get cable and
  308. has no TVI even though we are approx. 60 miles from NYC TV xmitters.
  309. I thought for sure before setting up shop that this was going to
  310. be my main hurdle!!

  316. P.S. As a point of interest, I called up GE (for my phone) and posed
  317. as an owner with a ham living next door (actually me!!). They said that
  318. ham/cb interference they consider ***natural*** interference and
  319. would send me a filter (guess it will be akin to ATT's Z100A). They
  320. went on to say if it didnt help, there was nothing more they or I
  321. could do!!

  330. There are many sources of information but I have not had
  331. luck with most of them. But recently found good info.
  332. See ad at bottomof page 158 of Nov 89 QST.
  333. Rich Measures AG6K 805-482-3034 sells you a good sheet
  334. of information and kits of parts. The parts supplied
  335. are two chokes and two capacitors to be installed inside
  336. the phone in a balanced pi filter configuration. It works
  337. when a Z-100 wont touch the problem. Also he has hints for
  338. other difficult situations. He sells the kits for $7 for 
  339. parts to cure five phones. So even though the parts are
  340. standard his price is so low that it is worth it to get
  341. the information. Also he is very helpful on the phone.
  342. Another thing. The Z-100 only has two wires connected. If
  343. you have two line phones and use all four wires you cant
  344. use it at all. But of course you can install two of Rich's
  345. filters inside the offending phone.

  359. Someone before was looking for Transverter manufacturer info. Don't forget
  360. TRANSVERTERS UNLIMITED. Hans Peters VE3CRU builds many fine units. See
  361. his add in QST or HR for more info. I believe he operates out of 
  362. Ontario Canada and New Boston, NH.
